In July of 1968, while enjoying the prospects
of the next stage of his life, a white envelope drops through the mail
slot in the front door one day as he is sitting nearby. Addressed to
him, the contents start with the salutation 'Greetings'.
Jerry is drafted into the United States Army. While in basic training
at Fort Bliss, Texas, he is given the opportunity to resign from the
draft and enlist. This move adds a year to his obligation, but
guarantees him his choice of training and perhaps away from combat duty
in Vietnam. Jerry will serve in the US Signal Corps for the next three
years. |
