Jerry's first exposure to the art world is at age six when he enters The Denver Post newspaper's 'Kid Color Contest'. This state-wide contest requires the coloring in of a peacock cartoon that Jerry picks up at a local appliance store. As it turns out, Jerry wins first place and for that is to receive a new one-dollar bill. Jerry's excitement turns to determination as it takes him literally four years and several letters to the newspaper (penned by his dad) to finally receive his prize (likely out of some sympathizer's personal pocket).
